Out of water came wind with its wings
torn out, poured into a lake
the size of states
between countries—
Signaled with cannon fire
and steam whistles came light beyond
darkness, above the roar of two trillion gallons
an hour I watched the world illume of my doing,
framing what for all eras of human record before had been unseeable,
unknowable, this black planet now would never sleep, would never cease in any way—
My God, I thought, stepping out to the edge, Buffalo a thin streak of yellow fire,
the view so beautiful sound so fierce so vast so violent I closed my eyes and almost jumped
