Nashville Review seeks to publish the best work we can get our hands on, period. From expansive to minimalist, narrative to lyric, epiphanic to subtle: if it’s a moving work of art, we want it. We hope to provide a venue for both distinguished and emerging artists. Most importantly, thank you for giving us a chance to read your work. We appreciate it.

Reading Periods

You may submit fiction, poetry, and nonfiction three times a year: January, May and September. We opt for shorter, more frequent reading periods so that we can provide quicker responses to our submitters. We typically respond to submissions within 4-5 months. Please do not inquiry about the status of your submission until after our response time has lapsed. Submissions in all other genres are open year-round.

General Guidelines

All submissions are made through our online submissions manager. Please do not email your submission, as it will not be read. We encourage simultaneous submissions: if your work is accepted elsewhere, wonderful! Just leave a note via Submittable, so we know the piece has been taken elsewhere. If you wish to withdraw and revise your piece, please wait to resubmit until the next reading period opens.

All submissions must be previously unpublished (in either print or electronic form).

While the Nashville Review is a publication of the Vanderbilt University, current students and employees are not eligible to submit.

We are proud to pay our contributors. We pay $25 per poem & song selection; $100 per selection for all other categories, including featured artwork. Translators receive $25 per poem & $100 for prose selections.

The best way to get an idea of what work we look for is to browse through some back issues. Since our staff changes yearly, NR’s tastes are always shifting and evolving. Our entire back catalog is available free in the ‘Archives’ section.

Fiction Guidelines

We welcome short stories, flash fiction, and novel excerpts of up to 8,000 words. If you are submitting flash fiction (fewer than 1,000 words), you may include up to three pieces in the document you submit. Please submit only once per reading period.

Poetry Guidelines

We’re excited to read all types of poetry. We’re entirely open to publishing tight formalism alongside sprawling, experimental work. Send us up to 3 poems per reading period.

Nonfiction Guidelines

We welcome creative nonfiction across the spectrum. We’re open to anything: memoir excerpts, essays, imaginative meditations. Send us up to 8,000 words.

Comics Guidelines

We’re seeking literary comics. We’d love to see anything from one-page comics to excerpts from graphic novels. We do not publish cartoons in the style of The New Yorker.

The Nashville Review is proud to include Translation as a new submission category from NR 24 onwards! As with the rest of our submissions, we are looking for the best new writing – in this category we are looking for fresh contemporary writing that is currently unavailable to English-language readers. That means we are looking for pieces that have been published in their original language, but are previously unpublished in English.

Please send prose up to 8000 words or a maximum of two poems from the same author. Please also ensure you have permission from the rights holder to translate before you submit. (Detailed submissions instructions can be found via our online submissions manager).

Translators will receive 100% of the fee for accepted submissions: $100 for prose and $25 per poem.

Jukebox Guidelines

We prefer exclusive tracks: live recordings, studio versions, B-sides, unreleased songs, remixes, and so on—songs that aren’t easily found via traditional means. But we’re happy to consider anything.

Performance Guidelines

We’re looking for film, dance, plays and performance art of all kinds. Either attach a file of the work itself to your submittable entry, or direct us to your website where we can find it. Please provide a short statement about the piece you are submitting in your cover letter.

Featured Artist Guidelines

Following our website redesign, we’re placing a much greater emphasis on visual art. Beginning with Spring 2015, each subsequent issue will have a featured artist. This allows for up to thirteen pieces of your art to be showcased, and to be paid $100 for doing so. Submissions must be in a landscape/horizontal orientation. Ideal dimensions are 1492×682. Other sizes will end up being slightly cropped. Work—paintings, drawings, photography—may be submitted as attachments to the Editor at, or simply direct us to your website if it showcases available work.
