Typical Course Sequence

Note: This sequence represents a typical path through the major in sociology or environmental sociology. The sequence for any individual student may vary.

First Year: Either Soc 1010 or 1020 (fall). Also take one course from the core or elective areas. Students interested in the business minor should see the template on the page Careers in Business because you will need to follow a special curricular plan. Students in environmental sociology should begin their introductory Earth and Environmental Science course this year.

Second Year: At least two courses from the core areas. Very strong students may take Soc 3001 in the spring. Soc 3002 recommended. If you think you may want to do honors, we recommend taking Soc 2100. Environmental sociology majors should complete their second Earth and Environmental Science course during the second year.

Third Year: Soc 3001 in the fall or spring. Honors students and environmental sociology majors should have Soc 2100 and Soc 3002 completed by the end of the junior year. Take the remaining courses from the core areas and at least one elective.

Fourth Year: Take the remaining electives and core courses. Honors students have a different trajectory and should see their advisors.

Note: AP Statistics courses usually do not count for Soc 2100.

Students may opt to cluster their upper-level elective courses in a concentration area. This is an optional way to structure your advanced electives. The Director of Undergraduate Studies can write a letter confirming that you have completed a concentration area such as medical sociology; environmental sociology; law and politics; or business, organizations, and society.
