Sociology Celebrates Professor Jay Turner’s Retirement, April 2015.
Over a career spanning five decades, Professor Jay Turner investigated the relationship between stress and health status, and contingencies in that relationship related to psychological and social resources. He is well-known for his pioneering work in developing social stress inventories and in leading epidemiological studies of mental health and illness, and alcohol and drug-related problems. Google Scholar reports that his work has been cited more than 11,000 times. He is the author of 14 citation classics and the recipient of numerous professional awards, including the ASA’s Leo G. Reeder Award; the APHS’s Rema Lapouse Award; and the SSSP’s Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychiatric Sociology. VU Sociology celebrated his accomplishments and we will miss him.
