Mathematical Modeling in the Medical Sciences Conference
The Mathematical Modeling in the Medical Sciences Conference will be held at Vanderbilt May 18-21, 2009, in conjunction with the 24th Annual Shanks Conference and Lecture.
The conference is a forum for all areas of biomathematics, which encompasses the application of mathematical methods to the study of living organisms. Mathematics plays an essential role in understanding biological systems on many different scales of both size and time and has a rich history as a tool for biologists. More recently, mathematics has found applications in the medical sciences, both in the basic sciences of medicine and in patient care.
The Mathematical Modeling in the Medical Sciences Conference will include all areas of biomathematics, but speakers have been invited from the special interest areas covering models of cancer growth, models of epidemics and infection, models of physiologic systems and clinical practice, and medical imaging.
Each year, the Shanks Lectur serves as the keynote address for Vanderbilt?s leading mathematics conference. Nicola Bellomo of Politecnico di Torino will be the 2009 Shanks Lecturer. His talk, entitled ?Conceptual Paths From System Biology to Modeling Mutations and Progression of Tumor Cells,? will be delivered at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Stevenson Center 4309 and is open to the public.
