BA/MA (4+1) Degree Program
What is it?
This program allows outstanding French students to complete a BA and MA in five years.
What are the benefits?
Students with advanced proficiency in French work with a mentor to design a course of study tailored to their individual interests to prepare for graduate school or a career in diplomacy, business, law, or teaching.
What are the requirements?
- Completion of the major in French by the end of the junior year
- Cum GPA 3.5; French GPA 3.7
- 1 semester at an approved program in a French-speaking country
- Application to the BA/MA (4+1) Degree Program at the end of semester 5
- Completion of a thesis (50 pages)
Typical course of study beginning with French 2501w:
Semester 1 1 course 3 hours
Semester 2 1 course 3 hours
*Semester 3 Study abroad 12 hours
*Semester 4 1 course 3 hours
*Semester 5 1 course 3 hours
Apply to the 4+1 program
*Semester 6 2 courses 6 hours
Completion of French major 30 hours
Semester 7 2 courses 6 hours
**Semester 8 2 courses 6 hours
**Semester 9 2 courses + 3 thesis hours 9 hours
**Semester 10 2 courses + 3 thesis hours 9 hours
Presentation of thesis at end of semester
Completion of MA 30 hours
*Students may choose to study in a French-speaking country during the 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th semesters.
** In consultation with the mentor, 2 or 3 courses in the MA program may be undergraduate courses with added work for graduate credit. Students take graduate-level courses during the 4th and 5th years.
