Math Department Spurs Nashville SC to Victory
On September 18, eighteen members of the Department of Mathematics got the royal treatment as special guests at the Chancellor’s Suite in Geodis Park. Home club Nashville SC defeated visiting Chicago Fire in a 1 to nil thriller. Nashville SC forward Sam Surridge scored on a header, which came off a long-distance cross from NSC star player Hany Mukhtar in the 19th minute.
After the match, Mukhtar credited the Department for being the inspiration behind his glorious assist. “I looked up and saw all those world-class mathematicians and staffers, and I thought to myself ‘If 18 mathematicians are able to watch a football match and cheer at more or less the appropriate moments, then I can kick the ball off of Sam’s head and into the back of the net. So that’s what I did.'”
For their part, the Department members consumed various forms of food and drink, from nachos and popcorn to brisket tacos and cheese tamales. The halftime snack consisted of warm, soft pretzels.
Thanks to Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and his staff for making a wonderful night for the Math Department!
