WGS 3281: Globalization and Policy Making

Taught by Jamie Shenton, Lecturer, WGS.

Globalization refers to the increasing interconnection of social, economic, political, and culture life.  This course explores the relationship between gender, the political economy of globalization, and policymaking (or lack thereof) through a cross-cultural lens.  What happens when we go global with our examination of intersectionality?  What’s the line between activism and interventionism? How do state-level (in)actions both reflect and affect gender relations? As borders become porous, how can non-Western gendered ideologies offer a pane of reflection on our own gendered concepts and practices?  And how do our own gendered concepts and practices influence, for good or for ill, how gender is lived and embodied elsewhere?  In particular, we will examine how, on a world scale, gender relates to projects of self-making, social justice, human rights, bodily autonomy, consumerism, work, the mass media, sexuality, and reproductive and maternal health.
