Faculty Head

West House

Emily Pendergrass (she, her, hers) teaches literacy development courses with a social justice lens. Her research interests include improved reading practices with adolescents who struggle with school-based reading and how these practices intersect with teacher decision-making. Additionally, Emily works closely with the local, high-priority public schools, other schools around the US, and non-profit agencies in literacy coaching and facilitating professional development workshops. Her goal is to enhance literacy instruction for all learners. In this role, she works with inservice and preservice teachers to think about literacy as a social justice initiative where all students have a civil right to access reading, writing, critical thinking, and to engage in high-quality learning that will enhance their lives.
