Summer SAVY 2018: Session 5, Day 5 – Marvelous Mechanisms (Rising 5th/6th)

Posted by on Friday, July 20, 2018 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

This was the last day of Marvelous Mechanisms! We moved from analyzing four bar mechanisms to designing them. We learned two position rocker synthesis and two position coupler synthesis. These are two techniques to take desired limit positions of one link in a four bar, and come up with the positions of the other three links. These are graphical techniques that require compass and straight edge to complete. I hope students use their drawing tools to continue to practice these techniques and the others they’ve learned this week!

The rest of the day was devoted to final poster projects. Groups of three worked on depicting a mechanism that consisted of pulleys, gears, and linkages to perform a simple task in a complicated way. They created rough sketches, drew detailed drawings of connections, and finally transferred their ideas using drawing tools to poster paper. The results were presented during the open house!

It has been a pleasure teaching Marvelous Mechanisms and working with these talented students!
