SAVY 2019: Session 5, Day 5 – Dynamic Coasts (Rising 5th/6th)

Posted by on Friday, July 19, 2019 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

This week was a blast! We started out the day by reading a scientific paper. In this study, scientists drilled holes into seawalls to create artificial rock pools. They wanted to see if this would help algae and organisms live on hardened coasts. Then we investigated sea level changes over time from both satellite and tide gauge data. We compared sea level data to graphs showing temperature changes. One of the last topics we covered was greenhouse gases, their role in climate change (and hence, sea level rise), and alternative/renewable energy sources.

Then it was time for open house! It was great to showcase all that your students have learned and worked on this week. We hope you enjoyed hearing from your students and seeing them make connections about environmental change, coastal processes, and the role that humans play in coastal development and modification.

Thank you for sharing your bright students with us!
