Spring SAVY 2019, Day 2 – Autobiographies and the Story of You (3rd/4th)
Day 2 was just as amazing as last week!
After Jumping into the Day and reviewing our norms, we discussed three generalizations about change.
Ms. Adrienne and I then divided the class and took turns reading Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai and Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson. After reading these powerful picture books, students discussed how each of the generalizations appeared in the stories. We then compared Malala’s story to that of Chloe’s (the narrator for Each Kindness).
Using these storybooks as a springboard, the students then read Ray Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day,” a story about Margot who remembers the sun when her classmates on Venus do not. In this story, Margot is closely related to Malala, while William (the class bully) is closely related to Chloe and her friends.
Students finished out the day practicing writing either from Margot’s perspective in the style of Malala’s Magic Pencil or from William’s perspective in the style of Each Kindness. By using these texts as exemplars, students will have a chance to practice writing memoirs and biographical sketches before tackling their final projects.
As a reminder, next week we will be looking at how we age, using pictures from when the students were babies or toddlers and pictures of the students now. In addition, we’ll be looking at self-portraits from famous artists who captured their likenesses on canvas at different points in their lives and careers. These comparisons will allow us to discuss physical changes and how they relate to the three generalizations.
