We should have.<br \/>\nInstead<br \/>\nwe forsook our standard wish<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And blew the eyelash for<br \/>\nrain, traded<br \/>\nstars for storms. But<\/p>\n<p>We had no authority even to<br \/>\nwant a thing.<br \/>\nIt came to naught.<\/p>\n<p>Only under cover<br \/>\nof night,<br \/>\nclutching ourselves could we<\/p>\n<p>remember sinking teeth,<br \/>\nthe body\u2019s<br \/>\nslick glide through space<\/p>\n<p>or fingers red and wet from<br \/>\nharvesting<br \/>\nberries that grew on the neighbors\u2019<\/p>\n<p>side of the fence. Those were baby<br \/>\ndays and I,<br \/>\nfor one, am long since<\/p>\n<p>severed. Now I pour apple<br \/>\nvinegar<br \/>\ninto empty wine bottles<\/p>\n<p>to attract the flies and devise traps<br \/>\nfor scavenging<br \/>\nrats. We have to make<\/p>\n<p>do.
