It just needs a haircut<br \/>\nand to close its mouth when it smiles<\/p>\n<p>so we don\u2019t see its teeth. There\u2019re too many<br \/>\nfeelings. Cut out the feelings. Ditto,<\/p>\n<p>the facts. What poetry wants is a week<br \/>\nat the beach, a good tan, shrimp scampi,<\/p>\n<p>and cocktails that glow UFO-green.<br \/>\nFrom the lawn chair, it\u2019ll see the horizon <\/p>\n<p>is flat and the ocean is empty. Below<br \/>\nthis surface is simply more surface, <\/p>\n<p>which is why there\u2019s no need to splash.<br \/>\nWhat I hate most are insights. Yellowed <\/p>\n<p>and wolfish, they remind me of riddles<br \/>\nI once read to my sweetheart. We shared <\/p>\n<p>a beer float, and studied the clues:<br \/>\nwhiskey, a rope, fine china, and rings. <\/p>\n<p>Later we wept and returned, unenlightened,<br \/>\nto a home we adored, pancakes and coffee, <\/p>\n<p>headaches and naps. We had jobs and a bed,<br \/>\njoint-checking and pills.
