In the kitchen, she made tea<br \/>\nand watched my father write it in Korean,<br \/>\nas was the custom.  <\/p>\n<p>It was the first poem my father had written for her\u2014<br \/>\nhis muscular hand and the willow pen<br \/>\nmoved together on rice paper.<br \/>\nOn the porch,<br \/>\nhe lit the match<br \/>\nand she held the letter still<br \/>\nuntil the ashes broke.<\/p>\n<p>To the boy with a basketball across the street,<br \/>\nthe fire must have looked like an act of violence<br \/>\nor protest.  It is not that simple,<br \/>\nI wanted to tell the child,<br \/>\nit is self-sacrifice,<br \/>\nsomething more outrageous.  <\/p>\n<p>The wind rattled the dried eucalyptus on the windowsill,<br \/>\ncarrying the words, the rain-ghosts that linger<br \/>\nin the summer cold.<\/p>\n<p>We were both filled with wishes,<br \/>\nmy mother and I\u2014<br \/>\nshe let hers burn<br \/>\nand I went to read mine in a book of poems.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"\/nashvillereview\/archives\/6046\">Rosanna Oh<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When her mother died, my mother burned a letter without a sound or complaint.
