I made changes<\/p>\n<p>to my lesson plans, your suggestion<br \/>\nthat students finish on their own.<br \/>\nI hold a jug of corn kernels;<\/p>\n<p>you have already unpacked.<br \/>\nMy best friend talks to you,<br \/>\ndumping his music collection<\/p>\n<p>like he\u2019s simply switching clothes<br \/>\nwasher to dryer at the laundromat.<br \/>\nThis is the kind of dream I have learned<\/p>\n<p>to wrestle my way out of. Your body is next to me<br \/>\nand I slide my hand to your navel,<br \/>\n<em>like a pitted olive<\/em>\u2014something I have sneaked<\/p>\n<p>out of the dream. On the gymnasium steps, the jugs<br \/>\nof kernels have been pushed to one side. I worry<br \/>\nabout mine spilling, accidentally seeding the ground.<\/p>\n<p>I worry about the sucking in my chest<br \/>\nwhen I wake. What good might there be<br \/>\nin this shedding\u2014so completely? To see what our will<\/p>\n<p>will endure? How far we will each trek<br \/>\ninto oblivion before\u2026what? Death<br \/>\nis no longer a word I use.<\/p>\n<p>I try to believe that sharing this fear<br \/>\nof separation is fear enough<br \/>\nto bring us back together. Something must<\/p>\n<p>hold us. As gravity becomes anachronism,<br \/>\nas love generalizes.
