{"id":5050,"date":"2012-04-01T00:10:16","date_gmt":"2012-04-01T05:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"\/nashvillereview\/?p=5050"},"modified":"2015-02-16T12:26:05","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T18:26:05","slug":"darlings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/5050","title":{"rendered":"Darlings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Henderson Luelling, horticulturist,<br \/>\njourneyed west in 1846<br \/>\nfrom Sioux City<br \/>\nwith his pretty daughters<br \/>\nEliza and Annabel,<br \/>\nand three covered wagons,<br \/>\ntwo full of budding saplings\u2014<br \/>\napple, cherry, pear, plum, and black walnut\u2014<br \/>\nplanted in rich Iowan dirt,<br \/>\ntheir branches waving like hands<br \/>\nthrough holes cut in the canvas covering:<br \/>\na rolling orchard, wondrous to see.<\/p>\n<p>Luelling, a pious and industrious man,<br \/>\nprayed over his little trees at night<br \/>\nand watered them by day<br \/>\nwith a porcelain amphora.<br \/>\nHis girls tended to the teams of oxen<br \/>\nand cooked porridge and bacon over fires<br \/>\nfueled by discs of dried buffalo dung.<\/p>\n<p>Forty miles from Fort Bridger<br \/>\nan axle broke\u2014black soil<br \/>\nspilled onto the hard-packed trail,<br \/>\nexposed the naked, reaching roots.<br \/>\nThe girls gathered as much of the dirt<br \/>\nas they could in their skirts. Two wagons<br \/>\nnow. A mouthful of water that tasted of iron.<br \/>\nRawboned rabbits cooked on spits.
