{"id":4888,"date":"2011-12-01T00:05:51","date_gmt":"2011-12-01T05:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"\/nashvillereview\/?p=4888"},"modified":"2015-02-16T14:09:15","modified_gmt":"2015-02-16T20:09:15","slug":"lazarus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/4888","title":{"rendered":"Lazarus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One by one, old men take him by both wrists<br \/>\nand are unable to speak; women kiss his palms,<br \/>\nand those that can, murmur: awed,<br \/>\na little ashamed, as if queuing to the bereaved.<br \/>\nUnder the seething copper cauldron<br \/>\nof the Bethany sun, he sits in a nave<br \/>\nof frozen air, as if carved out of meteorite,<br \/>\nthe taut air humming.<\/p>\n<p>And all the while, his sisters clutch his shoulders<br \/>\n\u2014forming the triptych\u2014<br \/>\ntheir tears in the skin of their teeth<br \/>\nas he looks at the mourners<br \/>\nwith eyes like the veil torn in the temple<br \/>\nbefore an empty tabernacle.<\/p>\n<p>And, looking, there were some<br \/>\nwho would have buried him again<br \/>\nrather than face this difficult recovery.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">_________<\/span>*<\/p>\n<p>Now that he\u2019s here<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know what to do with him.<br \/>\nAt table he touches things,<br \/>\nthen withdraws his hand.<br \/>\nAs if there are no words yet<br \/>\nand four days in the dark<br \/>\ncannot be shorthand for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, I\u2019m allowed to glimpse him<br \/>\nsitting, his back to the wall,<br \/>\nwatching a quiet will as it kindles<br \/>\nknitting like living bone.<br \/>\nDay after day, it drags his face to the sun:<br \/>\nthe oblique, crone winter sun<br \/>\nslowly unpicking the sutures,<br \/>\ndissolving the shrouds that grew over his eyes<br \/>\nall the time that he was dead.<\/p>\n<p>The seepage of slow, grey-black tears<br \/>\nunder the skin<br \/>\nhas made his face translucent<br \/>\nand unbearable.<br \/>\nHe is water seeking its own level.<br \/>\nWhere failure is success,<br \/>\nand success is just a word<br \/>\nsealing the truth.<br \/>\nThat there was a defeat,<br \/>\nlong ago.<\/p>\n<p>He is a shuffle on linoleum at midnight,<br \/>\na child at my door at four in the morning<br \/>\nstill locked in a terrible dream.<br \/>\nUntil I listen, he won\u2019t let me go on.<\/p>\n<p>Now he leads me to the threshold<br \/>\nof the first death.<br \/>\nHe has crafted caverns to get here:<br \/>\ntunnelled up through the strata of years<br \/>\nunknown, unarmed, unsure of a welcome.<br \/>\nHe is rich in grief: caryatids of onyx,<br \/>\nbloodstone, arteries of black diamond<br \/>\nlike defined, faceted dark;<br \/>\nthe spectrum of deep light.<\/p>\n<p>In the second life,<br \/>\nhe will teach me how to live.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"\/nashvillereview\/archives\/4752\">David McLoghlin<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One by one, old men take him by both wrists and are unable to speak; women kiss his palms, and those that can, murmur: awed, a little ashamed, as if queuing to the bereaved.
