Southerners<br \/>\nhad migrated bodily north<br \/>\nleaving fabric shreds in the mesquite, and the west was on fire. My sweetheart<br \/>\nsteamed a pot of wild mustard flowers<br \/>\nby the roadside, rain sizzling on the lid. Her shadow,<br \/>\nmy breath, the afternoon<br \/>\nthat moved on forever: people theorized the earth\u2019s orbit<br \/>\nwas off kilter, time<br \/>\nhad stopped moving right, and suddenly though we\u2019d brushed snow<br \/>\nfrom our walkways<br \/>\nthat morning, the sun began to rise two hours earlier. Smoke<br \/>\ngathered in corners<br \/>\nof the sky, and the peach trees budded, then blossomed<br \/>\nand bore fruit<br \/>\nin a week, but the fruit was mealy and filled with larvae.
