The air inside the air
\nkept getting smaller<\/p>\n
as we flew up,
\nwaving away the inches<\/p>\n
we had been living in,
\nthe faithful trees<\/p>\n
that had watched over us.
\nInside the gondola,<\/p>\n
sound became a gesture.
\nA lion on the wind<\/p>\n
and then its skeleton
\nhowling dyslexic gusts.<\/p>\n
The light bent swans
\nbetween the clouds,<\/p>\n
nasty, angry swans
\nwe could almost feel<\/p>\n
fucking up our ethos.
\nIt reminded me<\/p>\n
of when we stole the chicken,
\nhow it kept so quiet<\/p>\n
we dropped the knife
\nand just stood there,<\/p>\n
stuck around the pentagram
\nlike dumbfounded policemen<\/p>\n
who\u2019ve uncovered
\na whole town of nudists.<\/p>\n
I mean, yes, we were serious,
\nbut really we knew<\/p>\n
there was something wrong,
\nif not with us<\/p>\n
then perhaps with the system
\nthat trained us in Peace Studies<\/p>\n
before leaving us bored
\nand underemployed in a summer village.<\/p>\n
After a few hours,
\nwe drank the champagne<\/p>\n
tradition dictates
\nevery balloonist must carry<\/p>\n
to prove to suspicious farmers
\nthey are not aliens.<\/p>\n
We ate the \u00e9clairs
\nwe brought to remember<\/p>\n
how good the earth is
\nwhen the right elements<\/p>\n
are placed together,
\nhow totally amazing<\/p>\n
that from dirt
\ngrow proud tomatoes,<\/p>\n
and countless ideas from our days:
\nthe travel-size ghosts,<\/p>\n
the sandbags we throw
\nto help us get away.<\/p>\n
