{"id":4306,"date":"2011-08-01T00:10:59","date_gmt":"2011-08-01T05:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"\/nashvillereview\/?p=4306"},"modified":"2015-02-17T10:14:24","modified_gmt":"2015-02-17T16:14:24","slug":"the-plains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/4306","title":{"rendered":"The Plains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The years divided me<br \/>\ninto a tent of dirty settlers<br \/>\nand the hymns they left folded over<br \/>\nin lieu of calling cards.<\/p>\n<p>I considered the rituals,<br \/>\nthe festivals they replaced<br \/>\nby making their own louder.<br \/>\nI paced the cities they built<\/p>\n<p>beneath the undead stars,<br \/>\neach one a campfire<br \/>\nhours made more important<br \/>\nthan the stories told around it.<\/p>\n<p>The great advantage of the plains<br \/>\nhas always been the ability<br \/>\nto see one\u2019s enemies<br \/>\nin the distant weather.<\/p>\n<p>It makes the fighting feel artistic,<br \/>\nthe battlefield an easel<br \/>\nyou might stand in front of<br \/>\nas dawn paints quiet men.<\/p>\n<p>What you\u2019ve been falls away from you<br \/>\nas you stand there<br \/>\nsomewhere between your life<br \/>\nand the right words<\/p>\n<p>to describe what happened<br \/>\nor even imagine it,<br \/>\nviolence like a kind of root<br \/>\nbeneath the corn.<\/p>\n<p>Tendrils curl into parched monograms<br \/>\nbeneath my spurs<br \/>\nwhere I stand participating<br \/>\nin the idea of a vista,<\/p>\n<p>this imaginary architecture<br \/>\nthat keeps shooting<br \/>\nits own private Indians<br \/>\nabove the historical markers.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"\/nashvillereview\/archives\/4418\">Christopher DeWeese<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The years divided me into a tent of dirty settlers and the hymns they left folded over in lieu of calling cards.
