The smell some nights
\n_____<\/span>could\u2019ve simply been the marsh.
\n_____<\/span><\/span>Or crustaceans and bacon grease.<\/p>\n

Once insignificant of sin, like all land,
\n_____<\/span>god visited this friable acreage twice\u2014
\n_____<\/span>once in making, once in audit\u2014<\/p>\n

when god did range. Both times were
\n_____<\/span>quick, maybe efficient.<\/p>\n

Recently the county painted a bike lane
\n_____<\/span>for the courageous, the driven self-healers
\n_____<\/span>of port-to-port rides, sponsored signs.<\/p>\n

Could\u2019ve been their sweat or
\n_____<\/span>the sweet-smelling diesel of barges on the river
\n_____<\/span>or of 3 a.m. truck races passing each red light<\/p>\n

of the abandoned Coast Guard relay towers.
\n_____<\/span>Could\u2019ve been the wind from the city<\/p>\n

resting here. Could\u2019ve been the two executed men
\n_____<\/span>slowly sinking under the cordgrass and the light
\n_____<\/span>inodorous spiders, who stepped<\/p>\n

with their incredible knees
\n_____<\/span>over the metal-blown wounds of flesh and sand.
\n_____<\/span>The smell at night could\u2019ve been all of this.<\/p>\n

But not the locks of the new, red-doored condos\u2014
\n_____<\/span>all of them red against pestilence.<\/p>\n
