Of course,<br \/>\nwe both know it is the males<\/p>\n<p>who wander, the females<br \/>\nwho weave lawnward.<br \/>\nWhich is best, you ask,<br \/>\nto roam or to remain?<\/p>\n<p>We talk in the fickle light<br \/>\nof the sister who stayed<br \/>\nwhen she should have left,<br \/>\nof the irresolute boy<\/p>\n<p>who left our daughter,<br \/>\nso much shimmering into dark,<br \/>\nand then of our stolid selves,<br \/>\nhow we have stuck it out.<\/p>\n<p>I know if you left me,<br \/>\nI wouldn\u2019t wait twenty summers<\/p>\n<p>for your return though<br \/>\nI can imagine those who do,<\/p>\n<p>how one more day hangs on<br \/>\nto the next until decades<br \/>\nglisten into dawn,<br \/>\nhow these pale green stars<\/p>\n<p>keep time quiet<br \/>\nthough the glimmer<br \/>\nfades fast from the skin,<br \/>\nthe face.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my photo when I was 14,<br \/>\nwhen I knew a boy<br \/>\nwho crushed a hundred fireflies<br \/>\nand smeared them on his thighs.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I imagine<br \/>\nhim reappearing<br \/>\nin the teasel<br \/>\ndown by the fence<\/p>\n<p>though rumor has it<br \/>\nhe died of cancer<br \/>\nseveral years ago,<br \/>\nthat kind of lingering.<\/p>\n<p>I learned long ago<br \/>\nnot to cup my hands<br \/>\naround the glittering, not<br \/>\nto drown gleam in glass jars.<\/p>\n<p>I think Penelope<br \/>\nwas shocked when she saw<br \/>\nhis quivering torso<br \/>\nstrut into her mirror.<\/p>\n<p>She must have said to him<br \/>\nI thought you were dead\u2013no,<br \/>\nI thought you were your mother,<br \/>\nas I keep seeing my mother\u2019s face<\/p>\n<p>in photographs of my sisters,<br \/>\nas I suppose<br \/>\nthey see their mother<br \/>\nmuted in me<\/p>\n<p>though I have always thought<br \/>\nI look like my father,<br \/>\none like you who did not wander<br \/>\nand did not weep.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"\/nashvillereview\/archives\/3425\">Lois Marie Harrod<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caravaggio may have used a powder of dried fireflies to create a photosensitive mixture in his uniquely lit paintings.
