Eventually,<br \/>\nthey will drag their tinny bottoms<br \/>\nacross the driveway\u2019s cement<br \/>\nuntil they rest against a spigot\u2019s dry mouth<br \/>\nas if to say <em>whatever the price, I\u2019ll pay.<\/em><br \/>\nA bruise. A sheaf of paper. An attic.<br \/>\nPeter, where is the checkered suit<br \/>\nyou snagged against a stray nail<br \/>\nwhen we lie together<br \/>\nstraighter than the attic boards<br \/>\nthat warped beneath us.<br \/>\nHow did we know this was not enough?<br \/>\nA boot. A creak. A cloud of dust<br \/>\nrising from a blanket<br \/>\nthat covered our shattering cheeks.<br \/>\nYour lips moving against the back of my neck<br \/>\neven as I pulled away.
