This morning, I watched a woman shatter
\nthe thin ice on the pavement. I made the bed,
\ntucked in the sheets, and in the window,
\nI saw reflected my mother\u2019s face.<\/p>\n
Men in my life walked in and out of the room,
\ntramping snow. My mother shushed me,
\nand my father, with his brown, sinewy hands,
\npulled up a pair of clean, black socks.<\/p>\n
It isn\u2019t what you think. My father was
\na soldier. He taught me nothing
\nabout men. They are an empty barrel
\nyou\u2019re not supposed to look into<\/p>\n
or a gun you dismantle
\nto try to see its parts.<\/p>\n
