{"id":2055,"date":"2010-08-01T00:02:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T05:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"\/nashvillereview\/?p=2055"},"modified":"2015-02-13T13:14:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T19:14:00","slug":"the-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/2055","title":{"rendered":"The Girl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I woke up wanting\u00a0to lose someone.<br \/>\nThe beach was empty, and I watched a plate of white light flatten<br \/>\non the bay, so bright\u00a0a little boat seemed caught out there.<br \/>\nMaybe it\u2019s expectancy\u00a0that tethers us<br \/>\nto our bodies, I thought, then slices us open when we are most quiet.<br \/>\nWhich means no matter who leaves me and who does not, I will always be<br \/>\nthis body, this waiting girl in it. \u00a0\u00a0Wind opened over the water<br \/>\nlike someone scattering a fist full of dark spoons. \u00a0I thought of you pocketing<br \/>\nstones from the snow-rimmed beach, then piling them up all around your house. \u00a0I<br \/>\nthought of when you stopped cold<\/p>\n<p>as a gull snapped up into the sky, light on his underbelly\u2014<br \/>\n<em>look, <\/em>you said, and I did.<br \/>\nJoy\u00a0sometimes brings with it a loneliness\u00a0that makes me want to wash<br \/>\nmy face. \u00a0But if it&#8217;s not loss that makes sense<br \/>\nof all this longing, what is it? \u00a0Wind twisted through the water<br \/>\nin the most unraveled\u00a0of ribbons. \u00a0Wait,\u00a0no, lit white ribbons\u2014no,<br \/>\nreflections of a girl&#8217;s white hair in the water, ribboning out\u00a0as she tries<br \/>\nto touch it, completely\u00a0stunned at how slow<br \/>\nhair moves in the slow moving water and how fast it stops\u00a0the second<br \/>\nshe looks away, as stunned\u00a0as she&#8217;s been every second of her life here,<br \/>\nand will be every second until it&#8217;s done.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"\/nashvillereview\/archives\/1771\">Alice Neiley<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I woke up wanting\u00a0to lose someone.
