Some of the rocks have been
\nunderwater long enough
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>to grow thin strands of algae
\ntrailing off like hair<\/p>\n

being blown in the wind<\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>a great blue heron flies <\/em><\/span>
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>overhead around 10:30 am<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

by a pillion rider on a
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>Harley driving down Hwy 1
\nthis spring after the winter<\/p>\n

[ is this what they meant in <\/em>An American Tale that <\/em><\/span>
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>they were selling us as children in the 90s?<\/span><\/em> ]<\/p>\n

storms washed out the road
\n& crews came to bolster
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>the edges against collapse.
\nShining green in late morning<\/p>\n

light this algae is holding<\/p>\n

on against both the currents
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>of water & time,
\nknowing, as it does, that<\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>[ IIIIIIIIII<\/span>a new generation\u2019s white ford bronco<\/em><\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>]<\/p>\n

this creek will soon
\nreturn to being a dried bed
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>where slumbers become
\nhibernation till an unknown<\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>[ a sparrow\u2019s song is: <\/em><\/span>
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>\u201cPeace Peace, Peace, all my little children Peace\u201d<\/span><\/em> ]<\/p>\n

date, & the denizens
\nwill be the deer & coyote
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>not the goddess of the rivers;<\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>[ p i k p i k<\/span> ]<\/p>\n

she has given her life<\/p>\n

in the cycle of seasons which,<\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>[ IIIIIIIIII<\/span>out past breakwaters, sometimes, just sometimes,<\/span>,<\/span><\/em> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>]
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>[ IIIIIIIIII<\/span>the sun will shine heaven on a future<\/em><\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIiIIIIIIII<\/span>]
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>[ IIIIIIIIII<\/span>that we will have to write for ourselves<\/em><\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIIIiI<\/span>]<\/p>\n

\n& inlets & headwaters<\/p>\n

till we are all gasping from
\ndehydration.
\nIIIIIIIIII<\/span>But for now the algae<\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>words<\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>for<\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>the<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>sound<\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>of<\/span> IIIIIiiiiiIIIII<\/span>water<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>IIIIIIIIII<\/span>on<\/span> IIIII<\/span>hands<\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>in<\/span> IIIIIIIIII<\/span>need<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
