 <\/p>\n

Envy \/ Side A, Side B<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I envied them, the girls who came from the wealthy neighborhood<\/p>\n

with music folders so red and fingers that were let loose<\/p>\n

to the piano keys of Ms. Fanny, our neighbor.<\/p>\n

From a distance of several walls, you could hear how she begged them not<\/p>\n

to abuse Mozart.<\/p>\n

My father, who read all the treble clefs flashing in my eyes,<\/p>\n

and knew that the fingers hidden in my pockets wished to mix<\/p>\n

with the fingers of those girls, opened a wallet for me to see chasms<\/p>\n

of emptiness<\/p>\n

and understood the word “bread” appears in the dictionary before<\/p>\n

the word “Mozart.”<\/p>\n

“Tell them,” he said, “that you’re not being forced to study piano.”<\/p>\n

I didn’t believe it, but I said it anyway.<\/p>\n

And they, the daughters of military officers, suddenly envied<\/p>\n

the son of a property-tax clerk who wasn’t thrown<\/p>\n

into the battles of the Do-Re-Me.<\/p>\n

I knew then that you need to tear the dress off the body<\/p>\n

of the word “envy” so that everyone sees the scars of the lie<\/p>\n

that I scorched into me,<\/p>\n

that I scorched into her.<\/p>\n
