To the West, the ridges burn,<br \/>\nsmoke slides down the mountainside<br \/>\nwith the dusk and settles in the valley<br \/>\nbelow where workers clear-cut<br \/>\nthe shoulder, scraping back a layer<br \/>\nof grass and evening primrose<br \/>\nthe same way my sister peels her beauty<br \/>\nmasks. In my family, we women<br \/>\nhave a fuzzier face than most: a vestige<br \/>\nof our German side. Soft, thin, fine,<br \/>\nin the right light it catches and glows<br \/>\nlike Hawkin\u2019s <em>Les Aureols<\/em>. So too, this fire<br \/>\nslashing through back-lit trunks<br \/>\nand drought-stained pine boughs<br \/>\nhas the corona effect. And here,<br \/>\nbetween flora and flame, my grandfather\u2019s<br \/>\nwords return: <em>If you don\u2019t burn away<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the underbrush from time to time,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the whole place chokes and dies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/18888\">H.m.
