{"id":18684,"date":"2023-06-11T14:35:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-11T19:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=18684"},"modified":"2023-06-11T14:54:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-11T19:54:20","slug":"call-sign-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/18684","title":{"rendered":"Call Sign: Mother"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>2023 Porch Prize Winner in Poetry<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">We cloverleafed into love:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">two pilots, mutually attracted<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">to hazard, to defying gravity,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">to the thrill of a bump<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">on an airspeed dial\u2014the push<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">of the needle past Mach one, meaning:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">we broke the speed of sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">When I met you, you were Cowboy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">We looped skies, flew upside down,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">belted beneath our glass canopies;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">occupying a safe intimacy<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">of distance. We burned fuel. Always, my<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">eyes on the ejection handles. \u201cHand grips<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">raise,\u201d you\u2019d say. \u201cTriggers squeeze,\u201d<br \/>\nI\u2019d reply\u2014the boldface emergency<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">procedure for how to escape,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">if needed. You were talking strictly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Aerobatics. And sex.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Then, one day, you leave debrief<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">like a bullet train\u2014fly your long-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">bed Ford past dry West Texas<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">cotton fields, red dust pluming<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">behind you like contrails\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">returning home to feed a quartet<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">of new-sprung rabbits. Abandoned,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">you think, in alfalfa grass. Found,<br \/>\nlike a ball of recovered yarn. Tucked<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">into the corner of an old shoebox<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">stuffed with socks. The rabbits must<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">know your call sign has changed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Now, everyone calls you Mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">In my squad, they call me Mother,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">too. You\u2019ve called the vet, shopped<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">for three types of milk: condensed,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">raw, and goat. Eyedropper in your right<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">hand, rabbit in left. Five feedings<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">a day keep them alive. You beat<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">the dawn. By noon,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">you\u2019re back in bed at the rabbits\u2019 side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Sprawled out, spent. You fade<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">to nap as sunlight warms<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">the room. Sated. Content.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Fatigue has won. And one by one,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">they crawl inside your flight suit leg,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">burrow for warmth. There is so much<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">power in your hands, holding<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">throttles, flying three feet from<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">another jet\u2019s wings, bearing the weight<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">of Gs, rolling upside-down in aileron rolls.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Your jet\u2019s Talon wings like a knife<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">slicing the slipstream with afterburner<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">thrust. Raw. We\u2019re long-distance.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">We talk by phone from different homes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">and live on separate bases.<br \/>\n\u201cThey die at night,\u201d you say, hoping one<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">will make a fool of odds, disprove<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">the vet. You wake more often now.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">1 a.m., 3 a.m. \u201cA rabbit can startle itself<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">to death,\u201d you say. A fact I didn\u2019t know.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">You pray when drops of milk are all<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">you have to keep the chubby one alive<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">for one more day. And that is when I think,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">I will. I vow. Marry you, yes. Now,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">you hold the spade in your left hand,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">rabbit in your right, and dig a little red<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">clay away\u2014a fourth small grave<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">in the backyard, near the Bigelow Oak.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Two pilots, two mothers, breath<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">joined, unaware of the course ahead.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">A rehearsal for absences yet to come.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px\">We sojourn through the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Laura Joyce-Hubbard\u2019s work appears or is forthcoming in <em>Poetry, The Iowa Review, Sewanee Review<\/em>, and elsewhere.
