{"id":18596,"date":"2023-04-20T18:00:49","date_gmt":"2023-04-20T23:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=18596"},"modified":"2023-04-20T02:51:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-20T07:51:00","slug":"non-immigrant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/18596","title":{"rendered":"Non-Immigrant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\">The Vanderbilt Project on Unity &amp; American Democracy\u2019s 2023 Poetry Contest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Third Place<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">By Shlagha Borah, University of Tennessee, Knoxville<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse;width: 100.252%;height: 785px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%\">My homies ask me to teach my American friends how to cuss in our tongue.<br \/>\nI say: profanity is only for myself.<br \/>\nMy friend from LA says they can turn me into a brown Kylie Jenner.<br \/>\nI look at my skin and don&#8217;t see brown.<br \/>\nMy professor insists I am.<br \/>\nI say, can you teach me how to pronounce this?<br \/>\nI always pick the wrong syllables to stress on.<br \/>\nI laugh before they laugh.<br \/>\nI stand for hours in the social security office.<br \/>\nI write Assamese in English.<br \/>\nMy parents think in Assamese and translate every word into English.<br \/>\nThey are worried they might fail their Visa interview.<br \/>\nI have not even been here long enough to qualify as an immigrant.<br \/>\nI have always been a daughter of place.<br \/>\nI cannot see Ma\u2019s face for three minutes without freezing.<br \/>\nWe are oceans apart.<br \/>\nData is so expensive and it is only one thing.<br \/>\nI pay thirty dollars to draw my palms.<br \/>\nMy aunt grinds jetuka every Bihu.<br \/>\nI think of the borpitha Ma fries on Uruka night.<br \/>\nI barf the American-Mexican burrito bowl.<br \/>\nI make my White roommate try paan &amp; her mouth explodes.<br \/>\nI cook paratha and buy lassi for lunch.<br \/>\nI am running towards and away from my Indianness at the same time.<br \/>\nI go to Target and Walmart and Trader Joe\u2019s and I practice small talk.<br \/>\nI eat everything bagels and cream cheese and croissants and pop tarts and cheez-its<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">.<\/span>and<br \/>\nfrozen pizza for dinner and I forget<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t pack Aaita\u2019s <em>bogori<\/em> pickle.<br \/>\nI see cereal on both sides of the aisle.<br \/>\nI gape &amp; gape &amp; gape<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Vanderbilt Project on Unity &amp; American Democracy\u2019s 2023 Poetry Contest Third Place By Shlagha Borah, University of Tennessee, Knoxville &nbsp; My homies ask me to teach my American friends how to cuss in our tongue.
