Maybe mind imposes<br \/>\nsubstance onto absence, something<\/p>\n<p>I learned late childhood nights when<br \/>\nnightmares left me sweating sheets.<br \/>\nThere in the dark, a hum at some far<br \/>\nedge that wasn\u2019t the room\u2019s corner,<br \/>\nthe song of slipping through cracks,<br \/>\nof time trailing off life\u2019s dowsed wick<br \/>\nover a spreading wax pool. In these<br \/>\nmoments, children gone, wife at work,<\/p>\n<p>my hands empty, I wonder: if the song<br \/>\nlistens to us, what kind of instruments<br \/>\nare we? I know the sound of wasps<br \/>\nin the walls. How to hear their chewing<br \/>\nin the dark.
