Babushka<br \/>\nagrees, pities me, the two<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>unmanageable kids,<br \/>\nthe disabled husband.<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>It\u2019s just so hard for you<\/em>,<br \/>\nshe says, recalling<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>how her face burned<br \/>\nwhen she was left<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>on the top bunk of the train<br \/>\nevacuating her family<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>from Kyiv, the city not yet<br \/>\nsurrounded, but certain<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>to fall. War, more than<br \/>\nmemory. War<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>the way\u00a0she names<br \/>\nher life. Missing<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>without a trace. Her father<br \/>\nstayed back, died, and after him,<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>she named her daughter<br \/>\nLight. <em>He has to lie at Babyn Yar.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>Where else?<\/em> She asks, watching<br \/>\nthe third-night candle smoke.<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>I do not say black earth<br \/>\nis made of all our dead.<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>I do not say I\u2019m tired<br \/>\nof counting them. I say,<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>I will keep trying<br \/>\nto find his name.<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>I say, our people<br \/>\nare made of miracle<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>and half believe it<br \/>\nwhen I ask my father<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>about his dead.<br \/>\nHe doesn\u2019t know<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>their names,<br \/>\njust that they never left<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>Odesa. The <em>shochet\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nneighbor survived, he recalls,<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>severed\u00a0chicken heads<br \/>\nthe godly way and lit<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>Hanukkah candles<br \/>\nin their courtyard. He remembers<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>smoke rising<br \/>\nagainst December,<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>gray on black until<br \/>\nthere was no trace<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>of flame. But the past<br \/>\ndoesn\u2019t rise like smoke.<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>There is nowhere for it to go<br \/>\nmissing. The past is every<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>fried potato and charred wick.<br \/>\nMy son\u2019s\u00a0nail singed, singing<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>over the candles,<br \/>\nthe wrong words<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>of a Hebrew\u00a0blessing<br \/>\nwe were never taught.<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>The past rises<br \/>\nlike swifts, perhaps, who stay<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>aerial for months, digging<br \/>\nfor earth\u00a0in the clouds,<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>abandoning the sky only<br \/>\nto make more birds,<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>who will rise and rise<br \/>\nin swarms from narrow<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>chimneys, who will refuse<br \/>\nto smoke, who will return only<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>once having left<br \/>\ntheir names\u00a0carved<br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span><\/em>in unsuspecting air.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p6Jypy-4A7\">Julia Kolchinksy Dasbach<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t envy even\u00a0 &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;a second of your life, my mother says, not\u00a0 &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;a single second.
