As the photograph<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>shows, the first dart only served to further<br \/>\nanger the animal, fixed jaw-open in this square<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>of image I fuss over like a loose tooth<br \/>\nin my months of magical thinking.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>The tangled latticework of the window bars<br \/>\nthe tiger lunges toward, swathed in shadow,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>the gray bricks of the building lashed<br \/>\nwith the afterlife of rain, the fangs latched<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>onto the borders of the frame as a gesture<br \/>\nof fear those without hands can only express<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>through the mouth. Nowhere to be found<br \/>\nis the man who first carried the tiger<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>into the building swaddled in a blanket,<br \/>\nfeeding it clumpy milk from a bottle,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>leaning his face closer for a sample<br \/>\nof its stale breath as it snored in his lap,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>assembling a sandbox for the cat<br \/>\nwhen its muscles erupted into a landscape<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>of steep hillsides he tried his best to tame<br \/>\nwith the braided hair of dolls, discs of cow liver,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>strips of tablecloth sprayed with cologne<br \/>\nhe tasked it to find hidden behind<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>dressers, tucked under the rug, slipped into<br \/>\nthe gap between the wall &amp; the tank<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>where he kept his saltwater crocodile.<br \/>\nSometimes he\u2019d crack open the door, turn<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>his head away &amp; dip his hand into the hungry<br \/>\nmouth waiting there, letting it gnaw<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/span>at his skin until he could trace the warp<br \/>\n&amp; weft of the cuts with a pen.
