Split lip, <em>stovetop burn<\/em>, a knife<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>slipped to the quick against damp skin. <em>Scalpel<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>on flesh<\/em>. We find we share twin surgical scars,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>crooked, pale crescent moons, thin as thread.<\/p>\n<p>We delight in the knowledge<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>that our scar-sides even match\u2014left breast.<\/p>\n<p>Talk turns to everything shared: moon signs,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>blood types. We agree to trade kidneys<\/p>\n<p>for fun. At midnight I am tipsy, golden<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>in love with every leaving stranger<\/p>\n<p>in the dim light. I say I\u2019ll meet her again<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>in oncology, beneath the <em>Y<\/em> in the sign,<\/p>\n<p>when tumors pop back up<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>like stubborn mushrooms, inevitable<\/p>\n<p>in the soft clover patches of our breast tissue,<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>thriving in the absence of sunlight beneath skin.<\/p>\n<p>We hug, plan to reunite<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span>in our sixties.
