Douglas Fir,<br \/>\nBlue Spruce, dusted in nature\u2019s sugar.<br \/>\nI carry the hacksaw, run my small<br \/>\nfingers along its serrated edge,<br \/>\nuntil it\u2019s time to sever labor from its root,<br \/>\na slaughter of needles, a stump left searching<br \/>\nfor its spine. I sit at the windowsill and wait<br \/>\nto sound the alarm of new cars, surveying<br \/>\nthe battalions of trees, the swingset left<br \/>\ndangling on the breeze. When they arrive, I run<br \/>\nthe length of the driveway towards them<br \/>\nlike the horses who sprint the fields<br \/>\nacross the fence, all windswept<br \/>\nand nostrils. I carry bowls of candy canes<br \/>\nto our neighbors, take one for myself,<br \/>\nmy mouth prickling from the rush of peppermint.<br \/>\nI drag felled trees from their rows, their branches<br \/>\nas thick as my bones, their smooth wound<br \/>\nsticky with the smell of sweet pine.<br \/>\nMy father lifts them on top of cars<br \/>\nas if they were tinsel, and I fasten myself<br \/>\nto his heels, my feet dwarfed by his prints,<br \/>\nWe cut trees until dusk, against that endless<br \/>\ninevitable grey, until my arms and elbows<br \/>\nsore from the good work. For every callus,<br \/>\na coin left under my pillow.
