I don\u2019t<br \/>\nalways remember that I have a mother<br \/>\nin another country, that in her language<br \/>\nthe words for mother and horse sound the same.<\/p>\n<p>Years after the picture, we quit Chinese class<br \/>\nduring the second week because we keep forgetting<br \/>\nthat the word <em>ma<\/em> can name the way every birth begins<br \/>\nwith an animal. I say we and mean me<br \/>\nand my mother. The horse<br \/>\nI call my mother and the mother<br \/>\nI mispronounce into a horse I don\u2019t remember<br \/>\nriding. But this story begins with my mother<br \/>\nand I.
