The cysts in my breasts<br \/>\nmay or may not kill me, but I will learn them<br \/>\non the same screen that holds my daughter<br \/>\nin the uterine sac, her profile<br \/>\nhawkish. All things are imaginary<br \/>\nuntil we can touch them. I am touched<br \/>\noutside and in. The technician<br \/>\nruns a wand over my belly, my breasts.<br \/>\nIf not for the fetus that I mistaked<br \/>\nfor early menopause in my early forties,<br \/>\nI wouldn\u2019t have discovered the potential<br \/>\nfor threats that live just under the surface<br \/>\nof my skin at all times, lurking<br \/>\nas though a thousand clocks. Some women<br \/>\nsay fertility ticks inside the body,<br \/>\nbut I\u2019ve felt the end of time rise<br \/>\nsince I was a child and all was dark. Everywhere<br \/>\nthat the wand travels my body, pain<br \/>\nfollows. I swallow the urge to cry out.<br \/>\nI will wallow only when there is reason. In this room,<br \/>\nthe walls are dotted with butterflies. Real<br \/>\nbutterflies have a life span of one week.<br \/>\nMy daughter is trapped in the chrysalis<br \/>\ntransecting yesterday and tomorrow. I need her<br \/>\nto live longer than a week. How I will survive<br \/>\nafter she leaves me, I don\u2019t know. Barren,<br \/>\nperhaps.
