My tooth doesn\u2019t hurt now but<br \/>\nhas for months\u2014left-side wisdom I kept<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffffffffffff<\/span>pressing into its socket like it\u2019d work<\/p>\n<p>again. In the doorway, the surgeon calls my name.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffff<\/span>His slicked-back hair wouldn\u2019t budge in a coastline<\/p>\n<p>convertible ride, blue eyes like almost<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffffffffffff<\/span>every white crush I\u2019ve had. <em>Where are you from?<br \/>\n<\/em>he sits and asks. <em>Maryland, <\/em>I say, getting ready<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffff<\/span>for the needle. <em>No, I mean\u2014<\/em>like I\u2019ve misunderstood<\/p>\n<p>him\u2014<em>where\u2019s your family from? <\/em>I say <em>Hong Kong<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffff<\/span><\/em>because I\u2019m not quick or brave enough. Because<\/p>\n<p>I live in the most liberal town in Indiana. For this I should<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffff<\/span>be grateful, as if racism can\u2019t touch me<br \/>\nhere, wouldn\u2019t dare come near a <em>We Welcome All<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffffffffffff<\/span>placard or bumpersticker that says <em>Coexist.<br \/>\n<\/em>The hygienist asks, <em>Have you seen all the Chinese<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff\"><em>ffffffff<\/em><\/span><em>international students on campus? With their very <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>expensive cars? <\/em>I remember I\u2019ve paid for this posture<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">ffffffffffffffff<\/span>of examination, for a needle and someone to lift<\/p>\n<p>my pain.
