As if calling a name
\n<\/span>let our prodigals turn back\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

as if this diamond-cut valley
\n<\/span>proved anything of god\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

a boy waits in the dark
\n<\/span>trying to lead a man<\/span><\/p>\n

between two worlds. He imagines
\n<\/span>hoof-clip and holster rattle\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

a bandaged hand
\n<\/span>clutching the black orchid<\/span><\/p>\n

of an open wound.
\n<\/span>The afterlife, too, stands open,<\/span><\/p>\n

but the boy isn\u2019t ready
\n<\/span>to turn away or go to sleep\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

he\u2019s ready for footsteps,
\n<\/span>a struggle, shadows in the plains\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

as if angels crossed these skies
\n<\/span>on horseback<\/span><\/p>\n

or moonlight
\n<\/span>were another animal to tame.<\/span><\/p>\n
