{"id":15807,"date":"2019-12-01T01:00:55","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T07:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=15807"},"modified":"2019-12-01T01:23:58","modified_gmt":"2019-12-01T07:23:58","slug":"birmingham","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/15807","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>i.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is red,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is total red wound<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bathing around our red feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is red silence<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of years of red lips<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spitting red fog from the red-stained<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Glass suburbs covering what we want<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To turn red below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Birmingham, Iron City, is the red cardinal male<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; his majesty taking the red air for granted<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; his freedom to go where<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red berries grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Birmingham is bright<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red, is dull with red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ii.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I inherited you,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were those who flushed red,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Called it a blessing. &amp; when I grew beside your red creek beds,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; when I put on a red jumper for school pictures<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To send in red Christmas cards, I felt red with joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In school I read my history,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sat ready to take in my veins the lines of a flag I was pledging<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allegiance to with red candy on my tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was happy to be holy, to paint my nails<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With holy woman red, so I could stand<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among the Crimson Tide red t-shirts as they bulged beside<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Their cars flashing red, their motors revving red, not turning<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red with rust as they tinseled streets, Starbucks to steeple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">iii.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Once you see red, you cannot un-see red, once you taste the penny<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In your mouth, you cannot un-taste red, once red paints<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your panties red, you cannot wash out red.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At twelve, when I first bled, my mother said, try not to show<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The red, wrap it in tissue, so no one can see the red. Wives redressing their lips for men who rubbed their<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bellies full of red meat, wives painting their children\u2019s cheeks with<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Birthday balloon red, wives painting their own cheeks clown-nose red<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For men who thumbed red letters on beer cans that contorted<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Love into stop sign red, into belt-whip red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always there was red.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brick college red applauded red-faced men who told us<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We needed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to be well-read. Red pen corrected us by day while red tears<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fell from our legs at night when red letterman jackets spread us apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">v.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where I saw red barrettes, I saw girls riding red<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bikes along the red-lines of school districts, through forests of holly innocence,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sweaters picked open by backyard branches, heels ruby-blistered<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In afternoon red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where I saw red, I saw girls poppy-field drunk,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not clicking heels because home was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">away<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, on us, in us, in the sweat of tomato sandwiches<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On a Dr. Pepper day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But where there were girls in a red state, there were women<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Becoming. &amp; the poison oak days of adolescence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where my blood was red, I saw it write horoscopes<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the covers of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cosmo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; where maps mapped us in difference, I heard<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">White communities picking at jokes<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About KFC red, do-rag red until breaths hushed<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the red valentine of one month<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of national recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nobody knew how to talk about all the reds,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So we stuck poinsettias around our doors, called them<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charity &amp; fundraiser, &amp; sprinkled deviled-eggs<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With paprika, in Birmingham, Iron City,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where blood baptized a bomb<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the basement of a church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What do we know of red?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What land is my red, what land is yours?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What great is there in red?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What happens if we listen to it,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look at it, all the torches blazing red,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between church &amp; state, where red defines<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; destructs, where red is subverted until red is neat<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With red, where health for a body is cherry-picked,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When love for a body is cherry-popped?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vii.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red are the books,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That christen the laps<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the Birmingham, Iron City Sunday people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red is the seal that colors the inside cover<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of a Birmingham student\u2019s biology text, wherein<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Alabama State Board of Education inserts,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe theory of evolution by natural selection<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is a controversial theory\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Once you read red, you cannot un-read red, once you taste the penny<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On your tongue, you cannot un-taste red, once red is in your words,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You are leashed to red, you cannot un-speak red.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">viii.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For a school trip, we board a bus, we pack a lunch,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; we take the red-logo crunch of our Lay\u2019s potato chip bag<br \/>\n<\/span>To sit at Moundville on the graves of Indigenous women &amp; men.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We say, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here, &amp; only here, is where lived the old people of Alabama<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We say, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">these graves they made themselves! Just look at their homes by the ruddy<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">River! Just imagine how florid were their rituals!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We say, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kind archaeologists discovered their red pottery,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp;, look here, they placed it behind glass,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp;, get in line here, this is where we pay<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For our red tickets to the red-tent show!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &amp; we climb<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The rustic stairs, stomp red Nike checks<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the sacred hills of their dead. &amp;, then, we go home<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To our parents to tell them our proud story,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&amp; they are glad we are not red-faced with questions<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because they don\u2019t know more than a patriotic<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Day-trip to this grave either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next morning, we go to our red-swing-set backyards to dig<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our nail-bitten hands into the dirt, hunting feverishly for the pink-quartz<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of an arrowhead. &amp; we don\u2019t know yet,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But we are hot-eared with curiosity<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the wicked red tale we inherited,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A palatable crime-novel mystery\u2014the \u201cdisappearance\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of red. &amp; we dream of our name in red, on a marquee,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When we will become the young girl<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in her<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">own backyard<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one band-aided knee later,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Found the artifact &amp; \u201crescued\u201d the lineage of red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Red is the question of this land &amp; family,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you sit well-fed, in a big chair on a Sunday afternoon,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Running your hand over the red felt of your grandfather\u2019s<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shriner\u2019s hat, as your mother walks in,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saying she\u2019d like you to have her mother\u2019s<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Garnet earrings, as your mother walks in, saying she\u2019d like you to have<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any heirloom at all, in this city that is built<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On false-ally &amp; cold alloy,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That was taken, that wears the proud-iron<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Histories of what was poured<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By others\u2019 hands, so many bodies<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drained of red.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/15843\">CARRIE CHAPPELL<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>i.
