I imagine her hands\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">swimming through fire\u2014sugar and pits\u2014clearing<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">skin of char. Her daughters would grow\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">afraid of boiling, never bring red fruit<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to the stove again. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fire, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">F<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ire,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> my son singes\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the air with open palms and asks if I see it.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My great-grandfather must have burned too,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">though none of us saw those flames either.<br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My boat, Fire, Fire, falling fire.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When our people&#8217;s bodies\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rose too high\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My mountain, Fire\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Germans<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or Russians or Ukrainians\u2014anyone\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">without ashes in their blood\u2014discovered<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">burning<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">always makes more room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They named the dead\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a waste of space inside the earth, my ancestors,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a certain waste above it.
