{"id":15696,"date":"2019-12-01T01:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T07:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=15696"},"modified":"2019-12-01T01:29:07","modified_gmt":"2019-12-01T07:29:07","slug":"beekeeping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/15696","title":{"rendered":"Beekeeping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Iris, spirea, rose of Sharon.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daylily, lilac, Japanese pear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Summer\u2019s hum: pulse<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of bee wings, punctuating each image<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the belly of the image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A bee in a center of petals.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The needle\u2019s eye the center of the needle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All summer long, my father labored<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at the apiary, donning a second skin.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The cumbersome suit<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">made his movements stylized,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">otherworldly. His face<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">twice-veiled behind mesh<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and a shroud from the smoker<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which parted from his hands<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as if conjured there.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the skein of fumes, the frantic hive<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">settled into torpor, and my father<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">would reach into the Langstroth,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">scrape propolis from the walls,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and pry out a honeycomb\u2019s<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perfect geometry. He\u2019d crush<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the wax until each cell broke<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and honey suffused through<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a strainer, gathering like gold<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the bottom of a pail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And all fall long we\u2019d eat<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the sweet of the stinging things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">III.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We marveled at the mastery<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of the wax prisms, at the artist<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that consumes its art<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and thereby lives forever<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quickening twilight. The first desiccation<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of leaves on pavement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The garden\u2019s thrum died<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">into a slack idle<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as winter approached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hive turned to alms<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of sugar water, the infusion sticky<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on my father\u2019s fingertips long after<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he\u2019d made his offering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bees did not always survive.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At evening, starved corpses littered the ground.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By dawn all evidence was gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">V.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the hospital, my father dreams of flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s skipped walking,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gone straight past the necessary<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">into the realm of desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He does not yet seek a cogent voice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or turn to the question of original wishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But I dream only of narrow beds, of mouths<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unable to speak, wanting as I do<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the return and not the great leap forward,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the image and not the imagined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outside, the sky is an impossible blue,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hard and cold\u2014a pretense of sun. A lie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After weeks without<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">my father\u2019s aid, the hive vanishes.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A migrant murmur. Water<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">disappearing into water.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not one trace of ruin remaining<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">upon which to stake a poem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VII.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When my father comes home,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we feel the lack<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the garden, but do not speak of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We ignore the possibilities of metaphor:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">absent hive, vacant house,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">orphaned flower.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are too simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am the fled child.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My father is the hive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My father is my father.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is a streak of wings across the sun<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that briefly shadows the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/15843\">GABRIEL FINE<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I.
