I am a tyrant.<br \/>\nBut the light lingers, prisms caress my eyelashes,<br \/>\nMy ears and my eyes.<br \/>\nI\u2019m afraid, but I\u2019ve never felt so sure of my steps.<br \/>\nBoards creak beneath my feet.<br \/>\nCats are walking, they lick me.<br \/>\nWe are at war with the buses honking outside.<br \/>\nWe ignore them.<br \/>\nWe accept the noise, at home we always accept.<br \/>\nWe slow down, we consume ourselves.<br \/>\nMy pillows dream of themselves.<br \/>\nMy dreams are extinguished.<br \/>\nWhat are they?<br \/>\nJes\u00fas brought me rare cigarettes from Brazil,<br \/>\nBooks with beautiful pages.<br \/>\nCilantro leaves caress the window.<br \/>\nThe lentils cook next to the purple teapot.<br \/>\nMonotony is a lovely island<br \/>\nWhere the world stops.<br \/>\nI\u2019m the one who turns and stumbles over my shadow.<br \/>\nFor someone who only knows shipwrecks,<br \/>\nIt doesn\u2019t matter how many rivers may be close to home.<br \/>\nThe cat\u2019s water fountain<br \/>\nSounds gentle<br \/>\nAnd I wash myself, like Sexton:<br \/>\n<em>I am a watercolor. \/ I wash off.<br \/>\n<\/em>And perhaps the reflection on the polished floor<br \/>\nAccuses me of existing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/15227\">tSara Emanuel Victoria &amp; David Brunson<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A poem by Sara Emanuel Viloria, translated from the Spanish by David Brunson.
