She tells him his <em>doctor<\/em> doctor<\/p>\n<p>is lexical cloning, repeating a word to indicate<br \/>\nthe prototypical meaning is intended,<\/p>\n<p>but hers is something else: epizeuxis,<br \/>\nrepeating a word for emphasis. Ten hours<\/p>\n<p>later, when he\u2019s offered for dinner the other<br \/>\nhalf of a granola bar, he says he wants<\/p>\n<p><em>food<\/em> food. And even later, almost midnight,<br \/>\nhe asks a crying woman to follow him<\/p>\n<p>into the small room, and he says, Did not<br \/>\nsurvive. And then she asks, <em>Dead<\/em> dead?<\/p>\n<p>He remembers medical school, his first day,<br \/>\nwhen he still dreamed about entomology.<\/p>\n<p>So the woman in shock will understand<br \/>\nher husband is gone, he reaches for her hand<\/p>\n<p>and says, Dead dead.
