{"id":15021,"date":"2018-12-01T01:44:18","date_gmt":"2018-12-01T07:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=15021"},"modified":"2018-12-01T09:43:03","modified_gmt":"2018-12-01T15:43:03","slug":"prairie-burning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/15021","title":{"rendered":"Prairie Burning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once on a plane headed<br \/>\neast from California,<br \/>\nI watched light<br \/>\nripple across the ground,<br \/>\nblackening everything<br \/>\nit washed over.<br \/>\nI thought of the sparks<br \/>\ntrailing through the wrinkles<br \/>\nin Moses\u2019 face\u2014<br \/>\nhow in the wake of G-d\u2019s glory<br \/>\nhis skin must have cindered.<br \/>\nWe look at everything<br \/>\nbut each other,<br \/>\nhoping to catch the other<br \/>\nreflected in whatever dull thing\u2014<br \/>\nthe cold shoulder of a picture frame,<br \/>\nthe brass belly of a lamp,<br \/>\na doorknob oiled by our blind hands.<br \/>\nThere is a safety in this,<br \/>\nin being one degree removed<br \/>\nfrom the unveiled.<br \/>\n\u201cDo you think it comes<br \/>\nfrom inside or out?\u201d I ask.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s hard to say the thing you mean<br \/>\nwhen you don\u2019t understand the thing itself.<br \/>\nSo much goes unknown<br \/>\nfor fear of being named.<br \/>\nYou look at the window,<br \/>\nbut not through it.<br \/>\nThe sun is setting across Kentucky.<br \/>\nThe glass catches bright and dark.<br \/>\nI want you to delight in the haze<br \/>\nof my undressing,<br \/>\nbut know that it will burn.<br \/>\nI\u2019m looking for the place<br \/>\nwhere light gets in.<\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/14986\">Joshua Garcia<\/a><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once on a plane headed east from California, I watched light ripple across the ground, blackening everything it washed over.
