{"id":14760,"date":"2018-08-01T00:35:57","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T05:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=14760"},"modified":"2018-10-29T14:01:51","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T19:01:51","slug":"two-poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/14760","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Two poems by Sophia Parnok translated from the Russian by Rainie Oet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">What an amazing time it was!<\/p>\n<p>What an amazing time it was!<br \/>\nMe, in my twentieth year.<br \/>\nThe fountain gushed up<br \/>\nlike an arc of diamonds.<\/p>\n<p>Poplar fluff tumbled down,<br \/>\nand kids were up from the crack of dawn<br \/>\nstamping around<br \/>\nthe fountain in the lane,<\/p>\n<p>and the world was immenser,<br \/>\nand the sky was deep-bluer,<br \/>\nand \u2013 released from dovecotes \u2013<br \/>\ndoves plunged into the sky\u2026<\/p>\n<p>And life was even lighter<br \/>\nthan the poplar fluff \u2013<br \/>\nand oh so terrifying and fun,<\/p>\n<p>the way it took our breath away!<\/p>\n<p><em>October 4, 1927<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">I\u2019m yearning, the way animals yearn.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m yearning, the way animals yearn,<br \/>\nWith each yearning bone in my back,<br \/>\nAnd my heart \u2013 is like a door\u2019s bell<br \/>\nThat someone keeps ringing.<\/p>\n<p>Quiver, empty bell,<br \/>\nRing your alarm, trembling\u2026<br \/>\nIt\u2019s time to head to the dump!
