{"id":13700,"date":"2017-04-05T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T05:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/?p=13700"},"modified":"2017-04-05T10:33:33","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T15:33:33","slug":"we-call-im-buddy-toes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/13700","title":{"rendered":"we call \u2018im buddy-toes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018cause he got webbed feet. kids won\u2019t let buddy forget<br \/>\nhe slow but we figure he probly a good swimmer. we ain\u2019t never<br \/>\nseen buddy\u2019s parents. we ain\u2019t sure he got none<br \/>\nsince don\u2019t nobody sign \u2018is permission slips for field trips.<br \/>\nbut some kids think he live next to the johnsons<br \/>\nwhere mrs johnson hit mr johnson upside the head with a bat<br \/>\nand left \u2018im face in the grass with \u2018is legs on the porch steps.<br \/>\ndon\u2019t nobody know for sure but some think \u2018is house between them<br \/>\nand the smiths where james smith beat the shit<br \/>\noutta \u2018is older brother melvin cause he caught \u2018im in bed<br \/>\nwith a man, shouted <em>keep that gay shit out my house nigga <\/em><br \/>\nas he kicked melvin in the head and dick while melvin\u2019s boyfriend<br \/>\nran butt-naked down the street.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">____________________________<\/span>but buddy don\u2019t come out the house.<br \/>\nbuddy ain\u2019t got no friends. mike told buddy once<br \/>\nthat buddy should kill hisself but he told us he was sure<br \/>\nbuddy ain\u2019t have the balls to use a knife. er\u2019body knew<br \/>\nbuddy was tired of mike\u2019s shit.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff\">____________________________<\/span>after school buddy hid<br \/>\nbehind a bush. i saw \u2018im knelt down all small-like<br \/>\nholding a knife by \u2018is face. he looked right at me.<br \/>\nhe put the knife over \u2018is lips and whispered <em>shhhh<\/em>.<br \/>\nwhen mike walked past buddy jumped out. he chased<br \/>\nmike. you shoulda seen mike\u2019s face\u2014we ain\u2019t seen buddy<br \/>\nswim before but we seen \u2018im run and mike knew he ain\u2019t<br \/>\nstand a chance against those feet. buddy grabbed onto mike\u2019s coat<br \/>\nand mike jumped out it like that time michelle tried to grab the fish<br \/>\nout the fishtank and it slipped out her hand and into the sink.<br \/>\nbuddy punched the knife into the coat and mike kept on running.<br \/>\nhe stabbed the coat again and again<br \/>\nand again and again until the coat was just black shreds<br \/>\nand buddy fell down on \u2018is hans and knees.<\/p>\n<p>but i know buddy knew the knife wanted skin. he pulled off \u2018is shoes.<\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp0.vanderbilt.edu\/nashvillereview\/archives\/13494\">Marlin M.
