You say my neck smells like ten years ago
\n& here we are, students again, drunk
\nagainst the wall of our favorite club in the city,
\nwhere we danced to French music on Wednesdays,
\n& Arabic oldies on Fridays, & on Saturdays
\nit was dark enough & Bon Jovi still
\nsounded good in “Bed of Roses.” My body
\nbelieves your hands that travel down, & down
\nyears & years of us, & up to that first
\nsmall kiss by the river (I remember
\nthe sound of it, mostly). Will the best songs<\/p>\n

always feel like oldies now? & should we
\nbe worried? Dalida has a song where she forgets
\nshe\u2019s twice 18 & almost autumn,
\nwears too much makeup & seduces
\na young man. I ask you if, in theory,
\nan eighteen-year-old god would want
\nto undress me, & you inhale
\nthrough your teeth, begin
\nto say something when
\nour little girls call us back
\nfrom across these rooms & we walk
\ndown the corridor toward them.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve become better at this entangling
\nof our bodies, though we don\u2019t recover as fast
\nfrom vodka anymore, & the headaches last
\nlonger. Last weekend, we lay hungover
\non the sofa all day, & our girls
\nwatched as much TV as they wanted,
\n& they said, Thank you thank you<\/em>.
\nWe knew better, but still allowed
\nlove to sound easy sometimes.
\n& yes we\u2019ve wasted so much, & so many
\nof our days, but do you remember
\nyour old car? I was jealous of her,
\ncalled her Bitch<\/em>, complained about
\nthe windows that got stuck, & the seats,
\nbut she always got us home, despite
\nour speed & intoxication, foolish
\ngods that we were, that we are.<\/p>\n
