All skin, no air.<br \/>\nPotted peas hanging from rope, a wood<br \/>\npecker siphoning years from the heartbeat<br \/>\nof a willow. I was looking up from the black<br \/>\nhollow of my shadow like a sea cow following<br \/>\nthe shoreline. So in love with the diesel<br \/>\ngreasing the grass blades, the light finger<br \/>\nprint of each tip on my accordioned back.<br \/>\nThe march was short, like a dream<br \/>\nin which hours occur in drams. I took<br \/>\nthis time to remember the musical measures<br \/>\nof old lovers\u2019 neck stones. The different<br \/>\nways the sun would soprano through<br \/>\ntheir hair. And I remembered the glass<br \/>\nface of hate. How it was sharp from start<br \/>\nto finish. And I wondered the number<br \/>\nof who still felt it now. I pictured them<br \/>\nhearing the news that so-and-so<br \/>\nfrom the college years or that desk job<br \/>\nfinally absorbed the earth like a sponge \u2013<br \/>\nthat alchemical mixture of emotion, of nothing<br \/>\nto say but sure, sorry, send over the details.<br \/>\nI focused on my mother and her fingernails,<br \/>\nalways inked with soil, tomato blood, keeping<br \/>\nmy father from losing himself to God.<br \/>\nMy older brother weeping into the bed sheets<br \/>\nand his older brother ignoring the phone call.<br \/>\nI looked up to the salmon sun over Montana<br \/>\nrivers, shouldered by mountains, atheistic<br \/>\nto the satellites blinking out Morse. I recalled<br \/>\na girl choking on the lightness of morphine.<br \/>\nHow her blonde braids were donated<br \/>\nto the homeless. Some beads of rain never<br \/>\nblossom into energy. This sadness and evidence<br \/>\nmust be specific.
